AJ Clarke

Another year has passed since the family and friends of AJ Clarke heard the news that, following a mindless attack in the city centre a few days earlier, he had succumbed to his injuries.

Five long agonising years which AJ’s wife, children, grandchildren and parents, unlike his killer, have no right to appeal, no possibility of claiming that they’ve been harshly treated over not just a five year sentence, but a lifetime sentence; a lifetime of wishing if only AJ hadn’t gone to that cash machine and walked past killer Malik Al-Brumy, who, as everybody has witness on the CCTV evidence, viciously attacked AJ; an attack from which he could not defend himself and an attack which put him into a coma from which he would not survive.

Today our thoughts are, as always, with AJ’s family; as they will be this evening when Everton play Arsenal. AJ would have of course relished attending a big, night time, game at Goodison; in fact he relished attending any Everton game, but, as we all know, night games at Goodison are special, as was our dearly departed friend; so we’ll ask you all to take a moment this evening, remember why he meant so much to so many people, and raise a glass to a great Evertonian.
